The 'Boston Terrier'
An Original American Breed
An Original American Breed
About
Thank you for considering one of our Boston’s. Please enjoy this introductory letter as I tell you more about our breeding program and why a Patriot Farm Boston Terrier is your best choice.
I am a Professional Registered Nurse and work from home which allows me to be with my dogs 24/7 and provide compassionate care, love and affection to each of them. This is not a way to make a profit, it is my love and my life’s passion. I exclusively raise AKC Boston Terriers with the Intention of breeding the Healthiest and most Beautiful Bostons in the World!
Health: My goal as a breeder is to “Do no Harm”, to maintain and better the quality of my Bostons with each breeding so the bloodline may consistently produce exceptional quality Boston Terriers. Excellent Health is my MAIN focus. ‘MY GOLD STANDARD’ is to start with a foundation worth building on. Patriot Farm is the Leader in the effort in keeping NON-TAIL HEMIVERTEBRAE from the breeding pool and I hold the World Record as the breeder with the most OFA NORMAL SPINE Boston Terriers in their breeding program. My dogs are also clear of the testable diseases of JHC, DM, HUU, CDPA & CDDY with IVDD. I strive for OFA CHIC Certification on all my dogs- BAER, CERF, PATELLA, CARDIAC, TRACHEA & SPINE.
Showing & Meeting the Standards: This is another tool used on my journey to having the best Bostons in the world. I show at AKC events local to me between September and March here in Florida and attend select Boston Terrier specialties throughout the year. I also title my dogs through The international all breed canine association, IABCA. At these shows, the dogs are judged against the breed standard -not the other dogs standing in the ring with them as is the case with AKC “competition.” Getting to sit down and discuss my breeding strategies with AKC judges is very insightful for my breeding program.
Bloodline: I selectively breed to better the dogs in my breeding program and I routinely look for bloodlines to help improve overall quality. I prefer a more diverse gene pool for better health. I love all Boston’s though only the Traditional Black, Seal or Brindle Tuxedo are part of the breed standard and are allowed to compete in AKC Conformation events and this is what I strive to produce. The non-traditional Boston’s are recognized and registered with the AKC though they can only compete in AKC sanctioned Performance and Obedience Competition.
Client’s Interview and Reservation: I prefer non-impulse adoptions to help ensure the best homes possible for my Boston’s. I make a commitment to breed you a beautiful Boston after successful completion of our interview and acceptance of your reservation.
Be prepared to discuss the following with us:
What is your experience with owning a dog and why have you chosen this breed?
Who will be responsible for the dog’s care?
Is there a family member present in the home for several hours a day?
Puppies are demanding for feeding, exercise, training and family time.
If you have children in the home, will they be instructed in the appropriate handling and interaction with this puppy?
Are you committed to the health care and related costs for this puppy?
I recommend crate training for puppy safety and the prevention of property damage.
I also endorse the AKC training program “Canine Good Citizen”, which is offered by Petco. Are you prepared to provide that?
How long is the Wait: Timing is everything, sometimes I have a show pup I decide to place after a new litter is born so it could be quick. Typically, though most families can expect to be on our reservation list for several months but can be longer. Puppies are typically chosen between 4 and 10 weeks of age. This gives ample time to raise and evaluate the pups to determine which will go to a waiting family or stay with me. Many clients plan to bring their Boston home around vacation time which allows for a smooth transition into their lifestyle. Most are adopted as family or personal companions with Limited registration.
Puppy Development & Socialization: During the first eight weeks of life puppies are snuggled daily and exposed to household noises. They play in a puppy enrichment area and receive Early Neurological Stimulation to help develop a good immune system and coping skills later in life. Nail trimming starts at three days of age - this protects them from accidentally scratching one another and keeps their mommy comfortable as well. Pups are weaned between 4 1/2-5 1/2 weeks of age.
During the weaning process, the pups are exposed and encouraged to use a simple doggie door sensitized with 'potty bells' into an elimination area of pine shavings (as seen on my website).
When you pick up your pup, he or she will be pre-registered with the AKC and also Microchipped with the AKC Reunite for life.
I will give you a free sample of Nu-Vet vitamins, which boost the immune system - I encourage these vitamins for life as a part of your puppy’s nutritional needs. I also give you a complimentary set of 'Potty Bells' and a sample of shavings to use in your yard to encourage use of the designated areas you choose for your pup to use for elimination.
Being a responsible breeder, I am always here as a resource to the families who get one of my Boston’s and give back to our community through canine rescue organizations throughout the year. I provide safety and shelter for our dogs and have offered shelter to others during the hurricane season. We are always hurricane-ready with a generator, enough food and water for 3 weeks and adequate transportation for us to evacuate on a moment’s notice.
Our greatest achievements are not merely measured by our ribbons or awards, but indeed by the happiness brought to the lives of the families who choose to wait for one of our Boston’s. Besides finding the best homes for our Boston babies, we also measure our success through the quality of life of our dogs and the happy retirement and placement of our Sires and Dams when it is their time to leave our home.
{Having a true breeding program with several dogs is about growth and selection over time through the generations. Each of our dogs has an individualized showing, breeding and retirement plan}
Breeders who breed AKC registered dogs are held to a higher standard than any other Registry. AKC Breeders are regulated and inspected yearly in person by official AKC auditors. Breeding wonderful Boston’s with purpose and intention and meeting the AKC’s standards is an honor and a privilege.
We are inspected in person By an official AKC inspector every year we are always in compliance with the care, custody and control of our dogs.
We have excellent references and excellent communication skills and through the use of technology and FaceTime we are easily transparent to bring you piece of mind when communicating with us from afar.
We are proud Americans and give a military discount of $100.00 off the adoption to those who have served our country, active or retired.
We are also a Christian family, and thank the Lord for our Blessings of success and our ability to share with others.
Please finish reading through our website and if you would like one of our Boston’s send us a TEXT MESSAGE, include your name, address, email and that you are ready for an interview and then call me anytime. Thank you for considering one of our Bostons! Lori Chapman
